Geraldine Ferraro, the first woman and first Italian American nominated for Vice President of the United States representing a major American political party in 1984, died today at the age of 75 of blood cancer. Ferraro has been a leader in politics since elected for Congress in 1978, and an advocate for social justice and women throughout her life.
Her candidacy as first female Vice President shattered political barriers and paved the way for future women in politics. Ferraro is remembered for her fiery passion for causes such as the ERA and reproductive freedom, but also for her professional and dignified work ethic that earned her respect from all sides. Ferraro’s legacy of courage, civility, and commitment will continue to inspire us in the fight for women’s equality.
We send our condolences to her family, friends, supporters and all of the individuals she inspired.
