Madera resident Isabel Barreras has been appointed to the California Community Colleges Board of Governors by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. The board sets policy and provides guidance for the 72 districts and 110 colleges that constitute the state's community college system.
Barreras, a 44-year-old Democrat, is a State Center Community College District trustee and a member of the Madera District Fair Board of Directors.
Those supporting Barreras' appointment -- which still requires state Senate confirmation -- said she was the best fit for the board. One major reason is the Fresno region -- one of the state's largest -- has no representation on the 17-member body, and hasn't since 2002.
Barreras has served as administrative assistant for the Madera Unified School District since 2009 and outreach consultant for Madera South High School since 2006. She is also second vice president of the California Community Colleges Trustee Association.
